This Perfect Day, Brave New World, 1984: Dystopian Masterpiece This Perfect Day belongs to the genre of "dystopian" or anti-utopian novels, like Huxley's Brave New World and Orwell's 1984. Yet it is more satisfying than either. This Perfect Day is probably Ira Levin's greatest work of his career. Levin's work, despite being written in 1970, is very plausible having realistic technology, such as scanners and computers which watch over the entire family, the entire population of the world. This novel could be used to show the dangers of a Utopian society as well as being full of anti-Communist and anti-racist sentiment. This Perfect Day also displays the feeling that communist and segregated institutions can be defeated, as the protagonist Chip over powers the "family" and their vile Uni Comp as well as rising above the segregated community he reaches after fleeing the family. This work could best be placed in an area of the curriculum where it is the students job to learn that although everyone might not be equal, nor should they be, they are st ill human and deserve to be treated with the respect and kindness we would expect to be treated with. This work could be used in conjunction with other works of literature that display the same ideals against communism and discrimination as well as a lack of compassion for others. Other works that could be used in cohorts with Levin's This Perfect Day, are Harrison Bergeron by Kurt Vonnegut and even the Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood. Both of these novels show the dangers of trying to create a Utopian society and the chaos it causes. In Harrison Bergeron, handicapping has become an American institution and it is the governments responsibility to make sure that everyone is equal in every way which ends up causing chaos and rebellion. The Handmaid's Tale shows the dangers of when an extreme group takes over the United States after a nuclear holocaust, with women being placed in a submissive role to men, only being used to reproduce. This Perfect Day could also be used in a section with novels such as Uncle Tom's Cabin which portray the evils of racism and discrimination, just as the land where Chip ends up after escaping the family, is very racist and segregated. He is forced to endure the taunts and tortures of the folks who had fought Uni from the beginning, yet he rises above these bounds to return and destroy Uni Comp, thereby destroying the family.

Pakistan Earthquake

On October 8, 2005 the history of Pakistan turned a new page when a massive earthquake hit the northern part of the country. It was said to be the most powerful quake in the last 100 years. It had a magnitude of 7. 6 and was accompanied by more than 60 aftershocks. It killed and injured more than thousands of people and caused massive destruction in the northern part. It was early in the morning when the earth shattering quake jolted the residents out of their beds. Those who were already up and about ready to go, or were at work and school rushed out of their buildings into the open air as the earth shook violently beneath them. They started praying. Still many were trapped as the buildings come down on them. Most of the students lost their lives, as they were completely unaware that they would be buried alive under the ruins of their school building. My family and I had moved to Islamabad (northern part of the country) just two days ago. Our part of the city was not as affected compared to the other parts and because of that we felt lucky. The Margalla Towers, an apartment complex collapsed and killed most of the residents living there. Many of our relatives and family friends lived in that area. Mom tried to call them but the communication systems were disrupted by the quake. This added to the anxiety of the people who could not call their relatives in the affected areas. Many of them were injured and lost most of their family members to the quake. However the most disturbing news was that my aunt lost her husband and her six months old son. The quake affected millions of people directly and indirectly. The official death toll was 87,000 and more than 100,000 people were injured. Many dead bodies were pulled, from the rubble with missing limbs or completely crushed by the rescue teams. But also there had been a handful of incredible stories of survival. Rescue teams worked against insurmountable odd, and succeeded in pulling victims alive from the rubble. A six year old boy became one of the last to be pulled alive from the earthquake’s devastation. After 200 hours, Ahmad had remained conscious but trapped eneath the layers of rubble, which was all that remained of his family’s apartment. â€Å"I was playing with my truck, then I fell†, he said, recounting what had happened. The rest of the family was not as lucky. There were other amazing stories, a ninety year old woman was found alive while other members of her family were lying dead around her, with exception of her three year old grandson. She was left to raise him at this old age. A mother was recovered de ad and she was shielding two children under her. One had died but the other lived. The quake affected millions of people, ordinary people come in thousands to help in relief efforts. Volunteers answered the calls for blood donations and brought food, water and other goods for the victims. Muzaffarabad and its surrounding areas were badly affected. Most of the villages were completely wiped out, and roads were blocked by heavy rocks from the Himalaya Mountains. The Pakistan Air Force helicopters that were well equipped to perform relief activities waved their way through the mountains and flew over the affected areas. But landing in some areas was impossible. The clock ticked by, and despite the hard work of the rescue teams, many bodies were trapped inside the heavy rubble, with an acute smell of human flesh coming from them. Nature continued to be needlessly cruel. There was rain and hail, many people without shelter died. In less than two months, the Himalaya Mountains got their first snowfall and the temperature was below zero. Aid came from around the world. But still it’s too little and often the wrong kind. There were not enough tents, blankets and warm clothe to go around. Hundreds of tents had been provided but thousands of families remain out under the sky. They face rain and hail with dread in their hearts. They have lost everything even their hope to live. Imagine yourself buried under the heavy rubble alive, with no food, no water and constantly bleeding and weighting for your only killer†¦ â€Å"time†. The devastating earthquake shocked the nation, but brought out the best as they rose up to the occasion to help the victims.

It is often the case that the clinic waiting room is filled with visitors and it creates a claustrophobic environment. Negotiation and Conflict Management Once, Mrs. Alonso who is considerably analytical and observant walked into the clinic with her children Sergio and Rafael. Sergio was the elder of the two and was of calm and caring nature but on the contrary, his brother Rafael can be easily deemed as erratic and impatient. Both the kids were running around the clinic and shouting in a loud voice which turned out to be a cause of concern for the other visitors present in the clinic. The Alonso family conversed in Spanish between themselves (Tracy, 2013). Andrea, the receptionist of the WIC clinic, was a bit impatient and impulsive by nature and was getting frustrated with every tick of the clock with this scenario. After half an hour passed, she lost control and told another WIC employee that a person, who does not know how to control his or her kids, should not bring them outside. She yelled these things in such a loud voice that it was audible to everybody present in that small space (Eunson, 2007). She assumed that the Alonso family spoke and understood only Spanish, so she uttered the above-mentioned words in the English language. But, Mrs. Alonso understood English perfectly and as a result, this occurrence hurt her self-respect immensely. She felt terribly insulted in front of all those who were present. She immediately took both of her kids and left the clinic without even collecting her checks for the month (Wheeler, 2015). Though in this whole process, the elder son of Mrs. Alonso named Sergio was determined to stay at the clinic and stand up to Miss Andrea and do something about the insult that was inflicted on her family. Sergio was outspoken as well as challenging at the same time and he had an immense sense of self-respect as well (Beardsley and Lo, 2013). His fundamental objective was not to involve in a quarrel with Miss Andrea but to make her realize the mistake she had committed by insulting his family. But Sergio was not allowed to convey his thoughts to Miss Andrea, by his mother as she did not have enough confidence in him and she was fearful of conflict as well. From this whole scenario, a great sense of conflict arose fundamentally between two parties. On Miss Andrea's part, a major mistake was made when she publicly insulted Mrs. Alonso's family. Although it can be also noted that in that claustrophobic clinic, the kids were making a fuss, and Miss Andrea could have told Mrs. Alonso to look after them or stop them in another way rather than insulting them in public. Another major mistake in Miss Andrea's part was the fact that without in-depth knowledge about the person, she assumed that Mrs. Alonso did not understand English, as she primarily spoke Spanish (Negotiation and Conflict Management Research - Call for Papers, 2010). Her assumption was completely wrong and it was a major cause for the arousal of conflict in this case scenario. On Mrs. Alonso's part, a fundamental mistake was committed that she did not ask her children to behave themselves in a public place. She should have realized beforehand that the situation was bound to get out of control at some point in time sooner or later if she did not intervene and checked on her children from time to time. On Sergio's part, the major mistake committed was the fact that he should have taken control of his younger brother Rafael when he behaved out of bounds. Rather than controlling and monitoring is the younger brother, Sergio also opted to engage with him in his mischiefs and this can also be regarded as a possible reason for the arousal of the conflict (Hyvri, 2006). Conclusion It can be concluded from this case scenario, that a conflict can arise in practically any situation, and every involved individual has a small or major part to play in the arousal of the conflict. It can also be observed that if the individuals involved in the scenario kept their wits about the given situation at that given point of time, then the conflict could have been easily avoided. Again, they are not being genuine, the most important trait of kindness. Are they making a difference in someone’s life, or changing the world for a better? No. I’m not saying there actions are negative, but I do feel that people need to step up. Another Richards 2 act of hypocrisy that ties to kindness is being very polite to someone, but right when getting out of their presence, saying bad remarks about them. This obviously shows that that politeness was genuine. Therefore, in this case it is not an act of kindness. This does not mean that being polite is not an act of kindness, but when it is tied to hypocrisy, then is usually is. There can also vast differences between what really is kindness, and what is just being nice. There is a vast difference between being nice and being kind. As stated before, being kind is a genuine thing. Being nice to someone can include being polite but not making that person feel good after. Kindness makes people feel good, and that’s why it is essential to life. Many people believe that if they are polite and compliment people, but then behind their back they ridicule them, that they are being a generally kind person. This is false. Being a kind person means to make someone feel good not just for that split second, but for the rest of their life. An example of this is volunteering. Volunteering can make a change that can affect the future, not just the moment it happen. For example, I basically volunteer my time once a week to play jazz music in Rossmoor every Wednesday with the elderly people that live there. It brightens their day. This gives them time to talk and interact with the younger generation and share stories that the love to tell. Although it does benefit me in many ways, I feel that it benefits them in a greater way. Every Wednesday they are so excited to talk and play the music they grew up listening to. It gives them a chance to relive their childhood, maybe even college years. In my opinion, this is kindness. Volunteering is an act of kindness that is not replaceable, and different from just being â€Å"polite†, or â€Å"nice. This makes volunteering a legitimate act of kindness. Richards 3 Everyone has at least a couple problems in their life. This is unavoidable; we are humans. â€Å"Be kind for everyone you meet is fighting a harder battle. † (Plato). This quote expresses a great point that many is this world struggle with many problems, whether it be physically, or mentally. Kindness can change the lives of many gloomy people in a very positive way. And the thing is, is that it doesn’t have to be much. In my opinion, I believe that the greatest example of someone who wants or tries so hard to be kind is a dog. No matter if the owner is black, white, Hispanic, tall, short, smart, or dumb, that dog will always be kind and loving. If dogs are always kind, why can’t we be too? Being nice is a simple feet, while kindness is hard to reach, but very rewarding. Some may consider kindness to be simple task; it’s in each human’s blood. In some ways, yes, this true. The little things that people do to be kind isn’t done with great intent, it is just done from the heart, without thinking about it. But kindness can be humongous acts of not only goodwill, but heroism. Whether it is saving victims of 9-11 on the 38th floor, or carrying a victim of a brutal bombing to safety, kindness can be huge. Sure, it might be extreme to call these examples an act of â€Å"kindness†. But it all ties to the same point that kindness can be exerted in many forms, and is always appreciated through any situation. Is kindness on the rise in the USA today? In my opinion, many acts of kindness are on the rise. For example, all of the foundations and events helping to raise money for a cause. Twenty years ago there definitely wasn’t as many fundraisers as there are today. People are getting more involved today. There also is the opposite side. People are becoming lazy, not caring about the world and its inhabitants. Many people also don’t think ahead, for the future. I believe that to be a citizen and to remain a legal citizen of the United States one must put in the hours to aid the people and Richards 4 certain causes. Plenty can be done to make a change, but we as a nation need to step up and do it together.
